🦠 The Scroll of Special Bacterial Features — Understanding Tiny Bugs Trying to Live in Bodyland 🦠
Catalase-Positive Organisms
Catalase is an enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and oxygen bubbles before harmful products can form.
People with chronic granulomatous disease (a problem with NADPH oxidase) have trouble fighting bugs that have catalase.
Examples: Nocardia, Pseudomonas, Listeria, Aspergillus, Candida, E. coli, Staphylococci, Serratia, Burkholderia cepacia, H. pylori.
Mnemonic: Cats Need PLACESS to Belch their Hairballs (Catalase-positive organisms).
Pigment-Producing Bacteria
- Actinomyces israelii: Yellow sulfur granules — “Israel has yellow sand.”
- Staphylococcus aureus: Yellow pigment — “Aureus means gold.”
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa: Blue-green pigments (pyocyanin and pyoverdin) — “Aerugula is green.”
- Serratia marcescens: Red pigment — “Think red Sriracha hot sauce.”
In Vivo Biofilm-Producing Bacteria
These bugs form slimy layers (biofilms) that help them stick to devices or body parts.
- Staphylococcus epidermidis: Causes infections on catheters and prosthetic devices.
- Viridans streptococci (S. mutans, S. sanguinis): Cause dental plaques and infective endocarditis.
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa: Grows in lungs of cystic fibrosis patients and causes ventilator-associated pneumonia; also causes contact lens-associated keratitis.
- Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae: Causes otitis media.
Spore-Forming Bacteria
Some gram-positive bacteria can form tough spores when nutrients are low. Spores resist heat and chemicals.
Examples include:
- Bacillus anthracis — causes Anthrax.
- Bacillus cereus — causes food poisoning.
- Clostridium botulinum — causes Botulism.
- Clostridium difficile — causes Pseudomembranous colitis.
- Clostridium perfringens — causes Gas gangrene.
- Clostridium tetani — causes Tetanus.
God’s Hand in Bodyland
All these tiny bugs, their special features, and their struggles to live in Bodyland show the amazing complexity designed by the greatest Scientist — Jesus Christ, the silent programmer, anatomist, biochemist, physiologist, and Creator of Bodyland’s wonders.
