In the tiny world of Bodyland’s Microbeville, there are bacteria who don’t just learn by themselves — they *share secrets*, like passing notes during class. This secret-passing is called Conjugation — a fancy way of saying, “Let me hold your hand and send you something special.”
👫 The F⁺ × F⁻ Story — The Note-Sharing Trick
One bacteria has a **special circle of DNA** called a plasmid — it’s a bonus gene book that teaches tricks like making sex pili (tiny tubes like spaghetti arms). This bacteria is called F⁺ (F positive). F stands for “Fertility.” It’s like a popular student with a cool notebook.
Another bacteria, called F⁻ (F negative), doesn’t have this notebook. So what does F⁺ do? It stretches out its **sex pilus** (the DNA delivery arm) to connect with F⁻ and gently sends over a copy of the plasmid through a mating bridge.
Important: Only the plasmid DNA is shared — not the big classroom textbook (chromosomal DNA). Now both are F⁺ — they both know the same trick!

When this Hfr student tries to pass the info to an F⁻ friend, the hand-holding bridge sends not just the secret note, but also pages from the big class textbook too! However, it’s such a long transfer that it usually gets cut off midway, so the F⁻ friend may not get everything — just some new traits.
Important: The recipient remains F⁻ because it didn’t get the full plasmid, but it may now have new bacterial genes in its chromosome.
