Bodyland Bugs — Bordetella, Brucella, Legionella, Pseudomonas (Toddler Tone)

Bodyland Bugs — Bordetella, Brucella, Legionella, Pseudomonas (Toddler Tone)

👶 Bodyland Bugs — Bordetella pertussis, Brucella, Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Simple Bodyland stories + mnemonics. Big words are gently explained. Includes “why learn” and quick pearls.

Gram− coccobacillusWhooping coughTdap/DTaP

🗣️ Bordetella pertussis — “The Whoop Thief”

Bodyland picture

A tiny stick lives on the airway road and makes kids cough so hard they whoop when breathing in. It uses sneaky potions to keep guards away.

Toxins (baby words)

  • Pertussis toxin: turns off GicAMP goes up → lots of mucus & lymphocytes.
  • Adenylate cyclase toxin: also raises cAMP (more gunk).
  • Tracheal cytotoxin: hurts cilia sweepers.

Stages

  • Catarrhal: runny nose, mild cough (very contagious).
  • Paroxysmal: cough fits + inspiratory “whoop” ± post-tussive vomiting.
  • Convalescent: slow recovery.
Mnemonic: “Whoop ABC”Adenylate cyclase, Bordetella, Cilia damage.

Prevent: Tdap/DTaP vaccine. Treat: macrolide (eg, azithro). If allergic → TMP-SMX.

Gram− coccobacillusZoonosisUndulant fever

🥛 Brucella — “Cow-Milk Sneaker”

Bodyland picture

Comes from unpasteurized milk or animal contact. Hides inside macrophage trucks and rides to the spleen/liver, making caseating granuloma forts.

Clues & care

  • Undulant (wavy) fever, night sweats, achy joints.
  • Treat: doxycycline + rifampin (or streptomycin).
Mnemonic: “BRUCe drinks unBRUed milk → wavy fever.”

Gram− rod (poor stain)Silver stainUrine antigen

🛁 Legionella pneumophila — “Hotel Water Soldier”

Bodyland picture

Lives in warm water (AC, hot tubs). You breathe the mist, not from other people. In lab it likes charcoal yeast extract with iron & cysteine. Best seen with silver stain.

Diseases

  • Legionnaires’ disease: severe pneumonia (often one lobe), GI and CNS symptoms, labs with hyponatremia.
  • Pontiac fever: mild flu-like.

Dx: urine antigen test. Tx: macrolide or fluoroquinolone.

Mnemonic picture: a French legionnaire with a silver helmet by a charcoal campfire, holding an iron dagger and “no cyssy” (cysteine) attitude.

Gram− rodOxidase +Non-lactose fermenter

🧪 Pseudomonas aeruginosa — “Blue-Green Pool Painter”

Bodyland picture

Loves water & hospital gear. Smells like grapes, paints wounds blue-green (pigments pyocyanin/pyoverdine). Makes sticky biofilm and a mucoid capsule in cystic fibrosis lungs.

Who it bothers (PSEUDOMONAS)

  • Pneumonia, Sepsis, Ecthyma gangrenosum (black skin ulcers), UTIs
  • Diabetes, Osteomyelitis (puncture wounds)
  • Mucoid CF lungs, Otitis externa (swimmer’s ear)
  • Nosocomial device infections, Addicts (IVDU), Skin in burns/hot tubs

Toxins (baby words)

  • Exotoxin A shuts EF-2 (stops protein factory — like diphtheria).
  • Phospholipase C pokes holes in membranes.
  • Endotoxin (LPS) → fever & shock.
Mnemonic — CAMPFIRE drugs:
Carbapenems, Aminoglycosides, Monobactams, Polymyxins (B/colistin), Fluoroquinolones, thIRd/4th-gen cephalosporins (ceftazidime/cefepime), Extended-spectrum penicillins (piperacillin/ticarcillin).

🧰 Big Terms — one by one, simplified

  • Gram-negative: pink stain; has outer membrane with endotoxin (LOS/LPS).
  • Coccobacillus: short, chubby rod.
  • cAMP ↑: cell messenger that makes more mucus/water in airways.
  • Granuloma: immune wall fort around germs that hide inside cells.
  • Hyponatremia: low blood sodium (Legionella clue).
  • Biofilm: slimy shield bugs build on devices to resist drugs.
  • Non-lactose fermenter: won’t turn MacConkey plates pink.
  • Urine antigen: pee test that spots Legionella pieces.
  • Ecthyma gangrenosum: black, painful skin crater from Pseudomonas in sick hosts.

🎯 Why am I learning this?

  • Common ward problems: whooping cough outbreaks, zoonotic fevers, hotel-water pneumonias, device-related Pseudomonas.
  • Fast recognition → correct isolation, tests, and empiric antibiotics.
  • Builds the habit: symptom → mechanism → microbe → management.

✝️ Spiritual (Biblical) lesson

Small toxins can silence big systems (EF-2, cAMP). Guard your gates early. “The little foxes spoil the vines.” (Song of Songs 2:15) — prevention (vaccines, clean water, device care) saves lives.

Bug Spot fast Classic problems 1-liner memory
Bordetella pertussis Whoop cough; ↑cAMP; lymphocytosis Catarrhal → Paroxysmal whoop → Convalescent “Whoop ABC — Adenylate, Bordetella, Cilia damage.”
Brucella Unpasteurized milk/animals; intracellular Undulant fever, sweats, arthralgia; granulomas “BRUCe drinks unBRUed milk.”
Legionella Water aerosols; silver stain; charcoal + iron/cysteine Severe pneumonia + GI/CNS; hyponatremia “French legionnaire with silver helmet by charcoal fire.”
Pseudomonas aeruginosa Oxidase+; blue-green pigment; grape smell CF pneumonia, hot-tub/burn wounds, ecthyma gangrenosum, swimmer’s ear “CAMPFIRE” drugs; “paints pools green.”

Make flashcards: Front — “Legionella media?” Back — “Charcoal yeast extract with iron & cysteine; silver stain; urine antigen; macrolide/quinolone.”
